3 of 3 people found the following review helpful.I've never had a parts washer at home, and while I ordered this one quite some time back, I just used it for the first time today. If my experience today is any indication of future satisfaction, I think I'll be happy with this cleaning system for many years to come.I worked in truck maintenance and repair for many years. Hydrocarbon-based solvent tank parts washers are a part of every day life in that type of work and are simply indispensable, but having a true solvent tank parts washer in the garage at home has some downsides.Hydrocarbon solvent really cleans parts, but IT STINKS, especially when the garage is directly off the kitchen. There are flammability concerns, too. Plus, the chemicals are hard on the skin.I'd worked a couple of years at a place that was using an aqueous (citrus) based parts cleaning system that really worked well, so such a solution had been floating around the back of my mind for awhile.When I decided to get serious about buying a parts cleaner, I did some research and located quite a variety of sizes, shapes, and ranges of price for aqueous based parts washers. This one from Oil Eater is a bit on the pricy side for a 5-gallon unit, but it is compact, simple, well constructed, and well suited for my needs at home.PROS: This 5-gallon unit comes with one gallon of Oil Eater degreaser that is recommended for 1:1 dilution with water for auto parts washing. I found another gallon at the local store of a national auto parts chain. I mixed 2:1 (degreaser:water) today and was pleasantly surprised at how well I was able to fully clean the grease from my front wheel bearings for inspection and repacking. That's a good test for any parts washer. This stuff may not clean as well as hydrocarbon-based solvent, but it still cleaned effectively. Did I mention earlier that hydrocarbon-based solvent STINKS!!! This stuff DOES NOT. With a little compressed air and a second cleaning in the tank, I was able to do a really effective job of cleaning the bearings for inspection. In fact, the parts really seemed cleaner than if I'd used hydrocarbon-based solvent, as so often there is a dirty film left on cleaned parts unless the solvent is very fresh. The grease came off more in clumps than by being dissolved, but it came off. The bearing races and rollers were clean when I finished, and that's all that counts.The three gallons of cleaner in the tank provides sufficient volume for the pump to circulate cleaner, so I think I'll stick with that volume for now. The hose and brush assembly that's included seems of good quality and worked well for cleaning the bearings.I hung a sliding shelf under my workbench using some drawer slides. This compact unit stores nicely out of the way when not in use, and the weight of the unit and contents does not strain the drawer slides at all.CONS: I was not particularly impressed that I was supposed to plug the cord in and unplug it each time I wanted the pump to work. For the price, a toggle switch would not have been an unreasonable addition. However, after using it today, the pump is not noisy, and it wouldn't be much of a problem leaving the unit on for 10-30 minutes for a job. I'd already decided I'd prefer a switched operation and simply added a switched plug with an "extension cord" near the sliding shelf. I only connect the extension cord to the wall when I plan to use the parts washer but now can toggle the pump on and off as desired.RECOMMENDATIONS: I think anyone who is looking for a well built, compact parts cleaner for casual use should find this one to be a reasonable candidate. The aqueous degreaser supplied DOES NOT STINK up the whole house when I open the door to go from the garage to the kitchen. In fact, it's basically odorless. That's a HUGE PLUS!!! I looked at several small parts washers at local stores. Most were made of metal but were pretty junky by comparison. None came close to satisfying me, so I took a chance on this one from Amazon. The tank is plastic tank but seems to be constructed of very durable materials.All in all, I am pleased with my first experience with this parts washer.
